GIS Technician

Under general supervision, performs technical GIS work to develop, maintain, and improve the Town’s geographic information resources. Creates and maintains GIS data; performs quality assurance and quality control; produces maps and other cartographic products; researches and integrates data; and provides support for GIS applications and workflows. Collaborates with Town departments to provide accurate geographic information that supports municipal operations, planning, and decision-making.<strong>Examples of Duties</strong><br /><ul><li>Create, edit, maintain, and quality-check GIS data, databases, feature classes, and map layers.</li><li>Interpret and incorporate information from plats, deeds, legal descriptions, engineering plans, as-built drawings, and other source materials into GIS.</li><li>Develop clear, accurate, and useful maps and other GIS products for internal and external customers.</li><li>Research, analyze, and integrate GIS and related data from a variety of sources.</li><li>Support GIS data collection, verification, and maintenance in office and field environments as needed.</li><li>Assist with web-based and enterprise GIS resources, including maps, applications, and data services.</li><li>Respond to GIS questions and service requests by helping users find, understand, and use geographic information.</li><li>Work with Town departments to understand business needs and identify practical GIS solutions.</li><li>Perform data quality assurance and quality control and help maintain standards for accuracy, consistency, and usability.</li><li>Create and maintain documentation, metadata, procedures, and other resources that support reliable GIS operations.</li><li>Assist with GIS-related projects, process improvements, automation, technology evaluations, and other initiatives as assigned.</li><li>Stay current with GIS technologies, methods, and practices and share knowledge with teammates and customers.</li></ul><strong>Minimum Qualifications</strong><ul><li>High school diploma or GED.</li><li style="margin-left:0in;">Minimum of 1 year of education, training, certification, or experience in GIS, geography, planning, information technology, or a related field sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.</li><li style="margin-left:0in;">Minimum of 1 year of hands on experience using GIS software and working with geographic data, mapping, or related technology.</li><li>Ability to communicate effectively, provide quality customer service, and work collaboratively with others.</li><li>Valid Texas driver’s license and driving record in compliance with Town policy.</li></ul><strong> </strong><br><strong>Physical Abilities</strong><br>The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.* <br> <ul><li>To perform essential functions of the job must be able to read, write, talk, see and hear.  </li><li>Operate various office equipment, push, pull and/or lift equipment and supplies, lift and carry up to 50 pounds.</li></ul><br>* Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.<strong>Desired Qualifications</strong><br><ul><li>Associate’s degree or higher in GIS, geography, planning, computer science, information technology, or a      related field.</li><li>Two years of progressively responsible experience in ArcPro/ArcGIS Online.</li><li>Experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Online.</li><li>Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise or other enterprise GIS environments.</li><li>Experience working with municipal, utility, infrastructure, property, addressing, or public works GIS data.</li><li>Experience interpreting plats, deeds, legal descriptions, engineering plans, or as-built drawings.</li><li>Experience with GIS field data collection, GPS, databases, CAD, or asset management systems.</li><li>Experience with GIS data quality assurance/quality control, documentation, or workflow improvement.</li></ul><strong> </strong><br><strong>Knowledge/ Skills / Abilities</strong><br><ul><li>Working knowledge of GIS concepts, spatial data, cartography, and data management practices.</li><li>Ability to accurately edit, analyze, organize, and maintain GIS data.</li><li>Ability to interpret technical source documents and translate information into GIS.</li><li>Ability to troubleshoot problems, research solutions, and learn new technologies.</li><li>Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and quality.</li><li>Ability to communicate technical information clearly to both GIS and non-GIS users.</li><li>Ability to organize work, manage competing priorities, and complete assignments independently and as part of a team.</li><li>Willingness to occasionally work outside normal business hours or in the field when operational needs require.</li></ul>
